Peg Rail in Los Angeles

by Svetlana Dunn

A sun-bleached stucco wall in a Los Angeles alleyway catches the last amber light of a summer evening, illuminating a cluster of overgrown hydrangeas spilling over a cracked concrete planter. The flowers, heavy with late-season bloom, lean toward the fading warmth, their blue and white petals contrasting sharply against the dusty, textured plaster. Beneath the foliage, a rusted metal peg rail holds a single, forgotten blue enamel mug, its chipped paint revealing years of exposure to the dry heat. Dust settles along the baseboard where the wall meets the pavement, catching the low-angle glow.
