Colonial Street in Merida

by Milo Leach

Wet cobblestones in the historic center of Merida reflect the pale, diffused light of a post-rain morning, creating a mirror-like surface that doubles the colonial architecture. A street vendor adjusts a colorful awning near a doorway, the fabric glistening with droplets that catch the soft gray sky. Mosaic tile fragments from a nearby renovation project are scattered loosely on the damp ground, their bright blues and yellows against the weathered beige stucco of the adjacent building. One hydrangea bush, heavy with rain-swollen blooms, leans slightly over a wrought-iron railing, its leaves dark and glossy against the muted stone.
