Under the flat glare of noon, a weathered yellow gas pipeline marker stands upright in a patch of open grassland on the outskirts of Vancouver, British Columbia. The bright sunlight casts a short, sharp shadow directly beneath the metal post, highlighting the faded warning text and the rust around the runner where the cap meets the pipe. Surrounding the marker, the grass is dry and yellowed by the midday heat, stretching toward a distant tree line that separates the field from the urban sprawl.
