Olive Dish on Ferry Trolley Before Sunrise
by Betty Waters
Cool, diffused light from an overcast sky spills across a lacquered drinks trolley positioned on the deck of a remote ferry near Golmud. A ceramic dish holding dark olives rests on the trolley's polished surface, its glaze catching the soft gray morning air. Tiny scuffs and handling marks trace the edges of the lacquer, revealing years of travel against the smooth, dark wood. The trolley stands alone in a vast, open space where the deck stretches into the distance, showing the scale of the vessel and the quiet stillness of early winter. Reflections on the wet deck create a mirrored composition, doubling the silhouette of the trolley and the pale horizon line. A faint shadow falls across the rim of the dish, at the base of the object in the sparse, wintry landscape.
