Observing Peonies in Christchurch

The cool early morning light in Christchurch is thin and blue, catching the wet asphalt of a quiet suburban street in Papanui. A tabby cat, fur matted with dew, sits alert on the edge of a low brick wall, its gaze fixed on a patch of wild peonies pushing through a crack in the paving stones. Behind the cat, a weathered wooden chair with a faded floral cushion rests against a corrugated iron fence, the blue pattern dull under the overcast sky. The scene is still, save for the slight tremor of the cat’s tail. In the background, the silhouette of a distant church spire pierces the grey mist, anchoring the neighborhood in its familiar, post-rebuild landscape.
