Before dawn light breaks over Christchurch, the city is quiet but not empty. A man in a heavy coat walks past a closed cafe, his breath visible in the cold air. On a nearby bench, a Burmese cat sits watchfully, its fur thick against the chill. A rusted drawbridge is locked in the raised position in the distance, a permanent fixture of the Avon River. A tumbler of whisky neat with a cigar sits abandoned on a windowsill inside a nearby pub, hinting at the night's end. Smudges on the mirror edge reflect the dim streetlights.
