Obon Dance Circle Under Lanterns at Kyoto Shrine

Polished stone floors reflect the soft glow of hanging paper lanterns above a gathering circle of dancers. The vaulted ceiling rises high overhead, diffusing midday light into a cool, even wash that settles on the participants' traditional garments. Dancers stand in a tight ring beside a corridor lined with wooden prayer wheels, their feet planted firmly on the smooth surface. Early autumn light falls through high windows, casting faint shadows that stretch across the floorboards. Small highlights gleam on the lacquered wood of the prayer wheels and the wet sheen of the stone. The dancers form a solemn ring, their movements synchronized within the sacred space, while the lanterns sway slightly above their heads. One reflection of a red lantern rim glows on the dark stone near the dancer's hem.
