Neon-lit Gulab Jamun on Bakery Rack Before Dawn
by Annette King
Three golden-brown gulab jamun balls rest on a wire cooling rack, their surfaces glistening thickly with translucent syrup. The setting is a bakery interior in Xixón during the pre-dawn hours, where the room is dim and cool against the winter chill outside. Harsh neon reflections stretch across the sticky glaze and the metal wires, creating sharp streaks of electric blue and magenta that cut through the warm amber tones of the dessert. Soft window light filters in from the side, casting long, faint shadows that define the roundness of the sweets. The shallow depth of field blurs the background into indistinct shapes, keeping the focus entirely on the texture of the syrup and the porous crust of the fried dough. One droplet of sugar syrup rests on the edge of the frontmost ball, catching the neon glow.
