Muffin Tin in Durban

by Grant Burke

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Durban midday, a street-side spaza shop display is anchored by a stack of bright yellow plastic baskets, their weave tight and utilitarian. Resting casually atop the highest basket is a metal muffin tin, its greased cups catching the dull gray reflection of the sky, a stark industrial contrast to the organic produce spilling from the lower tiers. Beside it, a faded measuring tape hangs loosely from a nail, its red markings vivid against the peeling white paint of the corrugated iron wall.
