Mist rests on the corrugated zinc roof of a spaza shop in Umlazi, diffusing the gray dawn light into a flat, cool wash. Inside the open doorway, a woman in a faded yellow apron stands behind a counter cluttered with daily necessities. A chipped ceramic pitcher sits near a stack of flour sacks, its glaze reflecting the weak ambient light. Beside it, a pair of worn rubber slippers rests on the concrete floor, abandoned by the morning rush. Paint flecks on a drawer pull catch the damp air, hinting at recent repairs.
