Motorcycle at Desert Gas Station Before Sunrise
by Petra Ortega
Mist rests on the cracked asphalt of a rural Mexican gas station as a vintage motorcycle rests beside a weathered pump. The midsummer dawn light is soft and diffused, casting a pale blue hue over the rusted metal surfaces. Wind whips loose plastic flags attached to the station roof, blurring their edges against the gray sky. Reflections in the wet concrete create a symmetrical mirror image of the bike, doubling its silhouette. The fuel nozzle hangs motionless on the side of the motorcycle, its black rubber against the faded yellow paint of the pump. Dust motes swirl in the thin air near the ground, caught in the gentle breeze that moves the sparse desert shrubs in the background. at the edge is the sharp edge of a shadow falling across the wet pavement, marking the boundary between the illuminated pump and the darkened forecourt.
