A black cat sits motionless on a pile of damp wool, its fur matted with lanolin, watching a farmer’s gloved hands struggle with a stubborn jar opener on a glass preserve. Water rings stain the wood near a faded medal ribbon pinned to a tool hook, while a cluster of bruised apples rests in a wire basket nearby.
