Cool morning light spills across the wet asphalt of a Sydney laneway, catching the shallow reflection on a brushed steel tool chest left on the pavement. A local tradesman in high-vis shorts pauses beside it, adjusting the strap of a canvas bag, while a stray cat slips quietly past the open lid of the toolbox. In the background, the curved glass facade of a modern apartment building mirrors the overcast sky, against the rough brickwork of the adjacent heritage terrace. Steam rises faintly from a discarded paper coffee cup near the curb, blending with the mist that rests on the low-hanging streetlamps.
