Morning Light in Victorian Iron Glass Hall in inside a ribbed concrete lobby in Victoria

Morning Light in Victorian Iron Glass Hall

by Lucy Kerr

Soft, diffused light falls through the high ribbed concrete ceiling, illuminating the vast interior of a Victorian-era market hall. Iron beams crisscross the space, supporting panes of glass that reveal a sky heavy with low-hanging clouds. Late spring greenery peeks through the open archways at the periphery, against the cool grey of the concrete and the rusted tones of the ironwork. The floor reflects the pale morning glow, creating a seamless transition between the ground and the distant structural columns. Empty wooden stalls line the sides, their surfaces smooth and uncluttered, waiting for the day to begin. A faint dust pattern settles on the lower edge of a glass pane near the center.
