Mooring Rope in Venice

Sunlight slices through the narrow canal-side gap, illuminating a weathered wooden gondola moored against a moss-stained brick pier. A local gondolier, shirt sleeves rolled up, leans against the prow, adjusting a thick hemp rope that drapes over the gunwale. Behind him, a narrow staircase leads up to a residential doorway where a cluster of vibrant red geraniums spills from a cracked terracotta pot, their green fronds catching the bright late morning light. The water below is dark and still, reflecting the peeling ochre paint of the building facade. A pair of faded blue canvas shoes rests on the edge of the pier, next to a rusted iron cleat.
