Flat noon light fractures into dappled patterns across a towering stack of olive-drab field ration crates. Hard shadows cut sharp lines between the stacked cardboard and the weathered canvas gear resting against the base. The concrete parade ground near Dallas shows faint scuff marks and dust. Early spring leaves cast moving patches of green and gold light that shift over the institutional wear on the crates. Steel hardware gleams dully where the sun hits, while deep crevices in the wood and cardboard absorb the harsh overhead glare. A metal clasp on the nearest crate reflects the bright sky, anchoring the heavy, precise arrangement of supplies against the rigid grid of the ground.
