Heavy steel shelving units line the concrete edge of the Ningbo airbase flight line, their surfaces dull and scratched from years of use. One map case rests on the middle shelf, its canvas cover faded to a dusty olive drab, zippers closed tight against the damp late spring air. Low-hanging clouds press down on the horizon, casting the entire area into deep shadow while a sharp rim of pale morning light cuts along the top edges of the metal frames. The concrete ground shows faint tire tracks leading toward the distant hangars, creating strong perspective lines that guide the gaze into the gray distance. The rigid alignment of the shelves and the unopened case convey clear paused readiness, with the cold metal texture contrasting against the soft, diffuse light filtering through the overcast sky.
