Mechanic's Workbench in Lisbon
by June Jordan
A cramped mechanic’s workshop in Alfama glows under the harsh, flickering fluorescence of overhead tubes mixed with the cool blue spill from the open doorway onto the narrow cobblestone street. The concrete workbench is a chaotic cluster of tools, dominated by a heavy adjustable spanner resting atop a grease-stained rag next to a half-empty can of lubricant. Behind the bench, a peg rail holds an assortment of worn wrenches and screwdrivers, their metal heads catching the artificial light. Through the doorway, the deep indigo of the night is pierced by the warm orange sodium glow of a distant streetlamp, illuminating the textured stucco of the opposing building wall.
