Measuring Tape in Chicago

Mist rests on the Chicago Riverwalk at dawn, softening the hard edges of the steel truss bridge overhead. On a wet granite ledge, a pair of black rubber boots rests beside a coiled orange measuring tape, discarded by a worker pausing for a break. The gray light reflects off the slick stone, highlighting the texture of the rubber and the bright plastic of the tape measure. In the background, the blurred shapes of early morning commuters move along the path, their figures indistinct in the fog. A quiet moment of labor and transit, where the industrial tools of the city lie abandoned for a few seconds amidst the damp, cool air of the early morning.
