The cool stillness before sunrise casts a pale, diffuse light over the concrete edge of Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline. Two colorful beach towels, one yellow and one blue, lie crumpled on the damp pavement near a metal trash receptacle, their bright hues against the gray morning. The dark water laps gently against the shore, reflecting the faint, emerging light of the sky. In the distance, the silhouettes of Chicago’s high-rise buildings stand against the horizon, their windows dark and quiet. The scene is devoid of people, showing the quiet, empty nature of the early hour. The texture of the rough concrete and the soft fabric of the towels are clearly visible under the soft, pre-dawn light.
