The deep blue twilight of a San Diego evening settles over a narrow alleyway between stucco buildings, where the warm, yellow spill from a nearby porch light cuts through the dimness. A young man in a faded denim jacket leans against a weathered doorframe, checking his phone while steam rises from a paper cup in his other hand. Beside him, a rusted adjustable spanner rests casually on a low concrete ledge next to a discarded coffee grinder, remnants of a recent repair job.
