Fixing Electronics in Dakar

by Theresa Ashley

Under the amber sodium glare of a Dakar streetlight, a young man sits on a low plastic stool outside a small electronics repair stall, his face illuminated by the cool blue wash of a smartphone screen. He holds a disassembled radio chassis, using a small flathead screwdriver to adjust a connection while a half-empty cup of sweet mint tea sits precariously on a stack of spare parts. Behind him, shelves are crammed with tangled cables, spare batteries, and dusty houseplants that have adapted to the dusty indoor air. A dented metal rim from a discarded wheel catches a sharp reflection from the streetlamp, against the smooth, fingerprint-smudged plastic of a nearby remote control.
