Jackhammer Cart Behind Excavation Edge
by Barry Weber
Soft, overcast light diffuses across a steel jackhammer cart positioned at the taped-off perimeter of an excavation site in the Russian Far East. Early morning ground fog pools in the low depressions of the earth, clinging to the treated wood supports that line the trench. A gentle breeze lifts the edge of a heavy plastic sheeting nearby, creating ripples in the translucent material. Dust settles on the machine's rugged surfaces, mixing with the damp gray of the soil. The metal components show signs of wear and grease, against the pale, muted tones of the foggy atmosphere. Behind the cart, the excavation edge rises in layers of compacted dirt, marked by the stark yellow and black caution tape. A shadow from the plastic sheet falls across the wooden planks, highlighting the texture of the grain against the smooth, cold steel of the machinery.
