First light after rain washes over a laneway in Melbourne, turning the dark Victorian bluestone pavement into a mirror of the sky. A narrow brick arcade frames the view, its arches reflecting in the shallow puddles that ripple gently from a distant dripping gutter. On a low brick wall, a terracotta window box overflows with damp green ivy, its vines trailing down the rough masonry. Beside it, a cluster of white plastic mops leans against a service door, their wet bristles dark and heavy.
