Mist clings low over a laneway in Melbourne’s CBD, softening the sharp edges of red brick Federation facades and peeling lime-washed stucco. A street sweeper in a high-visibility vest pauses beside a rusted wheelie bin, his breath visible in the chill air. Near his feet, a discarded cardboard box lies open, revealing a single dented metal rim from a discarded bicycle wheel, catching the faint, diffused gray light. The wet asphalt reflects the muted tones of the surrounding weatherboard buildings and overhead tram wires. In the background, a faded poster for a local jazz club peels from a lamppost, its colors bleached by the damp.
