Amsterdam Ivy at First Light in in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam Ivy at First Light

by Micheal Lara

First light after rain washes the narrow canal-facing facade in a cool, diffused gray, highlighting the wet brickwork where rainwater still rests on the mortar joints. A tenant’s bicycle, locked to a rusted iron railing, leans slightly against the wall, its handlebars draped with a damp, dark coat that catches the pale morning glow. Below, a woven doormat lies flattened against the stone step, saturated with water and holding a shallow pool that reflects the sky. A small patch of ivy climbs the corner, its leaves heavy and glossy with droplets, against the matte, weathered wood of the shop shutter.
