Iron Balcony in Istanbul
by Rowan Lane
The narrow cobblestone alley of Balat opens into a summer evening where the fading sun casts long, sharp shadows against the peeling pastel stucco of a two-story wooden house. A rusted iron balcony, crowded with terracotta pots and tangled ivy, juts out from the second floor, its railing catching the last warm light while the lower street level falls into cool blue twilight. Below, a weathered wooden door is slightly ajar, revealing a glimpse of a dark interior cluttered with stacked ceramic tiles and a faded blue rug. One, bright red ceramic tile lies on the wet stone step, its glazed surface reflecting the distorted shape of a passing bicycle wheel.
