Inuit Elder Chin Tattoo in Plovdiv Low Sun
by Cameron Howe
Golden midsummer sunlight falls through heavy fabric and suspended dust, casting warm, uneven patches across a weathered face. An Inuit grandmother stands at the right edge of the frame, her traditional chin tattoo visible as a series of dark, parallel lines curving beneath her lower lip. Her parka, thick with fur trim, contrasts against the rough, ochre stone of a Plovdiv building behind her. Wind whips loose strands of gray hair across her forehead and stirs the fabric of her garment. The light highlights the deep texture of her skin and the coarse weave of her clothing. A faint shadow from a nearby window frame cuts diagonally across her shoulder, ending abruptly against the bright, dusty air.
