Grandmother Knitting in Harar Foundry Dawn

Pale dawn light spills across the dusty concrete floor of a Harar foundry, illuminating the rough texture of brick walls stained with soot. A grandmother sits on a low wooden stool, her hands moving rhythmically as she knits with thick wool yarn. The monsoon season is evident in the damp patches on the floor and the grey haze filtering through high, soot-grimed windows. Cool shadows rest on the corners of the industrial space, against the warm glow of a small fire burning in a metal brazier nearby. Thick cables and heavy machinery loom in the background, their dark forms receding into the gloom. The leading lines of the factory floor draw the eye directly to her focused expression and the soft movement of her needles. One strand of yarn catches the morning light near her knuckles.
