Hatmaker Shaping Felt Under Noon Sun
by Nash Cox
Crisp high-altitude light flattens the shadows across the workshop, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air. A hatmaker stands before a sturdy wooden block, hands pressing firmly into a thick sheet of gray felt. The material stretches and tightens under the force of the palms. Wind whips through the open window, fluttering a loose scrap of fabric hanging nearby. The wooden block shows deep grooves from years of use, its surface worn smooth by repeated contact. Outside, the flat glare of noon sun bleaches the color from the street below. The hatmaker's brow furrows with fierce concentration as they mold the shape. A stray lock of hair sticks to the damp forehead, illuminated by the harsh overhead brightness. The edge of the felt catches the light, revealing the fibrous texture of the wool.
