A weather station mast stands encrusted with thick ice, its metal struts glistening under the dim, gray light of pre-dawn Sapporo. The wind appears sharp, freezing moisture instantly on the vertical poles. Below, a tunnel portal retaining wall rises from the snow-covered ground, its surface patched with fresh, light gray concrete that contrasts against the darker, older masonry. Snow piles up along the base of the structure, undisturbed except for a few faint tracks. The scene is quiet and cold, showing the stark infrastructure of the city before the morning rush.
