Hydrant Spray on Hot Asphalt Raleigh

by Paula Randolph

Brilliant tropical sunlight floods the space beneath an elevated train line in Raleigh, illuminating a sudden burst of water from a red fire hydrant. The clear stream strikes the dark, heat-rising asphalt, creating a chaotic splash of white droplets that instantly turn to steam. Grey steel tracks run horizontally across the upper third of the view, casting sharp, linear shadows that slice through the bright morning light. The wet pavement glistens with a mirror-like sheen, reflecting the underside of the metal structure above. Tiny mist particles hang suspended in the air near the impact zone, catching the harsh noon sun. one drop of water rests on the edge of the hydrant's nozzle, poised to fall.
