Hummingbird Backwards Flight Trumpet Vine Sunset in under a circus tent in Brampton

Hummingbird Backwards Flight Trumpet Vine Sunset

by Norma Valentine

Molten orange sunset light slices through the humid air of a circus tent in Brampton, illuminating a ruby-throated hummingbird hovering in reverse. The bird’s wings blur into translucent discs as it retreats from a large trumpet vine flower. Heavy canvas walls of the tent frame the scene, their fabric texture visible in the dim interior. Rain has recently passed, leaving droplets clinging to the vine’s green leaves and the bird’s glistening feathers. The flower’s deep red petals curve outward, against the bird’s iridescent throat. Dust motes float in the narrow beam of side light, settling on the wet canvas floor. One bead of water slides down a vine stem.
