Cool morning light spills through a traditional shoji screen, casting sharp sun stripes across the polished cedar floor of a machiya townhouse. A small cluster of potted geraniums sits on a low wooden stand near the entrance, their red blooms against the pale tatami mats. On a nearby low table, a dish rack holds a few ceramic bowls, while a set of majolica plates rests in a cabinet behind them, their glaze catching the soft light. Hand towels hang neatly from a hook, and a bottle brush leans against the wall, evidence of recent morning chores.
