Helium Cylinders Stacked on Truck Tailgate at Dawn in on a wind-scoured research platform near Burlington

Helium Cylinders Stacked on Truck Tailgate at Dawn

by Louise Sandoval

Steel helium cylinders line the lowered tailgate of a work truck in perfect symmetrical rows. The metal surfaces reflect the pale blue light of first light while remaining mostly in deep shadow. A thin rim of orange glow traces the top edges of the cylinders and the truck bed. Salt spray coats the equipment in a fine, crystalline layer, evidence of the wind-scoured research platform near Burlington. Late summer grasses bow low along the concrete edge of the platform. The composition centers the stack of tanks, creating a rigid geometric structure against the soft, gray horizon. One cylinder valve cap gleams with a sharp highlight where the rim light strikes the metal. The symmetry holds from the ground up to the dark sky.
