Heat Shimmer on High Desert Road Near Cairo

Pale limestone dust coats the asphalt as a road stretches toward the horizon under a fierce midday sun. The air above the pavement ripples violently, warping the distant landscape into a wavering mirage of blue and silver. Massive cumulonimbus clouds build overhead, their dark undersides against the brilliant white light reflecting off a nearby body of water. The road surface appears cracked and dry, lined with sparse, drought-resistant scrub that stands motionless. Shadows remain short and sharp beneath the rocks, showing the intensity of the light. At the far edge of the distortion, the road seems to dissolve into liquid waves before reconnecting with the solid earth.
