Hawker Presses Sugarcane at Idanre Textile Stall

by Keith Nixon

Copper-toned light washes over a crowded textile stall in Idanre as a hawker operates a hand-cranked press. Raindrops glisten on the wet ground and the rough bark of sugarcane stalks stacked nearby. The hawker, clad in a damp shirt, grips the wooden lever while thick green juice streams into a metal basin. Behind the juice vendor, bolts of colorful fabric hang from the stall's rafters, creating a vibrant backdrop of reds, blues, and indigos. Long shadows stretch across the damp pavement, tracing the legs of wooden stools and the curved handles of the press. A fine drizzle softens the edges of the hanging textiles, while the metallic sheen of the basin catches the fading sunlight. at the edge is one drop of juice rolling down the side of the basin.
