A narrow, rain-slicked alley in Porto glows under the amber spill of a streetlamp as a local woman in a faded floral apron hangs wet laundry on a taut wire strung between crumbling lime-washed facades. She pauses to adjust a plastic clothespin clamped to the hem of a white linen curtain, the fabric catching the low light. Below, a chipped terracotta jar holds a collection of spare wooden pegs, resting precariously on a ledge of rough granite.
