Hangar Threshold on Naval Deck After Storm

by Evelyn Durham

Peeling gray paint covers the hangar threshold, revealing rust streaks beneath the weathered surface. Olive drab cargo nets hang loosely against the railing behind the structure, their synthetic fibers frayed by the wind. The wet naval deck reflects the flat, harsh glare of the noon sun, while ground fog pools in the crevices of the metal grating. Low-lying mist rests on the shadows where the storm front recently passed. Every surface bears the texture of service life, from chipped paint on the threshold to the taut lines of the nets. One bolt head catches the light at the corner of the frame.
