Glazed Tiles in Marrakech

by Jean Pearson

Rain-slicked cobblestones reflect the amber glow of a streetlamp in a Marrakech medina alley, where a local vendor adjusts a stack of glazed ceramic tiles under a corrugated metal awning. The tiles, in shades of cobalt and emerald, are stacked precariously but securely, their glossy surfaces catching the wet light. A few leaf shadows stretch across the damp ground, distorted by the rain’s ripple. In the background, a blurred figure in a djellaba moves past, holding a plastic bag, while the vendor’s hand, gloved in worn leather, rests near a simple hand tool used for trimming the tile edges.
