A narrow alleyway behind a Hawthorne Boulevard restaurant glows under the amber spill of a streetlamp, illuminating a stainless steel service door slightly ajar. Through the gap, a dishwashing station is visible, where a pair of damp white towels hangs over a drying rack, their heavy fabric pressing against the wire mesh. Beside them, a garlic press rests on a counter stained with years of use, its metal surface catching the harsh overhead fluorescent light that contrasts with the cool blue twilight outside. The wet concrete floor reflects the interior lights, creating shallow, distorted reflections that stretch toward the alley’s exit.
