Freight Train Winding Around Desert Butte Near Muscat Harbor
by Carmen Byers
Dry mountain light spills over a rugged desert butte, casting sharp shadows across its ochre slopes. A heavy freight train snakes around the base of the rock formation, its long line of boxcars cutting a dark path against the pale earth. The steel wheels gleam faintly where the late afternoon sun strikes them. Beside the tracks, the harbor mouth lies shrouded in a low, grey fog that softens the distant water line. The sky above remains a perfect, unbroken blue, against the mist below. Reflections on the wet, compacted soil near the tracks create a mirrored composition, doubling the image of the train cars and the jagged butte edge. The ground is rough and dusty, marked by tire tracks and the deep ruts of heavy machinery. A small cluster of dry scrub brush rests on the slope, its brown stems brittle against the stone.
