Forklift Mezzanine Dawn Sorting Light
by Ann Hampton
Amber beacons glow softly above a steel picking mezzanine, casting warm halos against the pale dawn light slipping across the concrete floor. Tote lights flicker in cool blue and white, illuminating rows of plastic bins arranged with precise order. Replenishment flags in red and green hang vertically from the railings, while white pick-path arrows point decisively along the metal walkway. Packing labels display routing logic in crisp black text against white backgrounds, readable even in the dimming lamplight that settles into the corner shadows. The early summer stillness holds the space before the first outbound wave, with no movement visible, only the disciplined arrangement of equipment waiting for the shift to begin. A reflection of an amber beacon stretches across the smooth gray floor near the base of a steel support column.
