Food Stall in Delhi
by Kofi Fleming
Under the harsh, flat glare of a Delhi noon, a street vendor manages a makeshift stall on a cracked concrete sidewalk. Two white folding tables are pushed together, their surfaces scuffed painted wood bearing the scars of countless meals. A heavy iron skillet sits cooling on a portable burner, emitting a thin wisp of steam that vanishes instantly in the dry heat. Behind the counter, a stack of clay pots holds tamarind water, their rough, earthy texture against the smooth, white plastic chairs nearby. The vendor’s hand, stained with turmeric, reaches for a metal spoon, while a faded Hindi sign hangs limp in the still air.
