Floating Potter Glazing Bowl in Varanasi Hall
by Layla Solis
Dim window light from a high opening mixes with the warm glow of interior lamps in the Godowlia market hall. A weather-beaten potter stands on the earthen floor, hands raised to apply glaze to a clay bowl that hovers in midair above their palms. Nearby tools, small jars, and loose shards of pottery drift at various heights, defying gravity while the surrounding market stalls remain firmly rooted. Soft reflections shimmer on the damp stone surfaces and the glossy wet glaze of the floating vessel. The early spring air hangs still, visible only in the suspended dust motes catching the blue evening light. The potter's rough hands grip the air, guiding the bowl that floats just inches from their chest. A faint shadow falls on the floor beneath the suspended clay, anchoring the impossible scene to the earth.
