Fisherman at Dawn Light

Mist rests on the slate rooflines of Salamanca Place as dawn breaks, softening the harsh edges of colonial sandstone facades. On a narrow, rain-slicked laneway, a local fisherman in a high-vis yellow jacket pauses to wipe condensation from a pair of heavy rubber boots, his breath visible in the cold air. Behind him, the blurred outline of a heritage building with leadlight windows stands against the grey sky. A discarded cardboard box rests near a storm drain, soaked through, while a lone seagull perches on a rusted bollard, watching the tide.
