First Light on Pigeons in Havana in in Havana, Cuba

First Light on Pigeons in Havana

by Aurora Wiley

Wet cobblestones reflect the pale, diffused sky of early morning Havana, slick with rain that has just ceased. A faded yellow colonial facade shows peeling paint, its texture softened by the damp air. On a low wrought-iron balcony, a cluster of vibrant red geraniums spills over the edge, their petals heavy with water droplets. Below, a few pigeons huddle against the wall, their feathers ruffled and dark with moisture. A simple ceramic cup sits on a nearby windowsill, half-filled with rainwater, catching the faint light.
