First Light in Karachi Paper Mill Ruin

by Sage Bonilla

Deep shadow fills the roofless nave of a decaying paper mill office near Karachi as the first light of late summer morning touches the upper edges of the crumbling walls. Thin sheets of white insulation flutter in the still air, detached from their original mounts and drifting near the exposed steel beams. Ground fog pools heavily in the low corners of the concrete floor, obscuring the base of broken desks and scattered debris. The rim light catches the rough texture of peeling paint and rusted metal, creating a sharp contrast against the dark interior void. Dust motes hang suspended in the narrow beams of dawn that cut through the open roof. One torn sheet of insulation rests against a jagged concrete pillar, its edge frayed by years of wind and neglect.
