Fig and Prosciutto Platter on Workshop Shelf in on a workshop shelf in Brazzaville

Fig and Prosciutto Platter on Workshop Shelf

by Jessie Goodman

Pale noon light floods the space, bouncing off walls that reflect a flat, white glare. A wooden shelf holds a platter piled with dark purple figs and thin slices of cured prosciutto, their textures sharp against the pale wood. The fruit skin glistens with a subtle sheen, while the meat shows marbled fat and salt crystals. Along the floor, muted reflections stretch across the concrete, distorted by the impossible architecture. Identical doors line both sides of the corridor behind the shelf, creating a repetitive pattern that defies the logic of rooms. The doors have no handles, only flat panels that mirror each other perfectly. The platter sits at the center, a concrete object in a spatial paradox where the hallway extends endlessly without depth. A shadow from the platter falls straight down, at the base of the fruit in the impossible geometry.
