Early Morning Sandcastle Competition on Granville Island Beach

Wet gray sand stretches across the foreground where a group of people stands facing the water. Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky reflects off the damp surface of a large, intricate sandcastle structure. Fine rain mist hangs in the air, darkening the beige tones of the sand. The subjects are viewed from behind, their jackets pulled tight against the chill of early autumn. Behind them, the calm waters of the harbor meet the shoreline, with the industrial outlines of Granville Island faintly visible in the distance. Puddles form around their boots, showing the dull sky above. A small wooden bucket sits abandoned near the wet sand, its rim coated in a thin layer of silt.
